Quick answer: Australian passport photos must be 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with your face 32–36 mm from chin to crown, in colour, against a plain white or light background, less than six months old. They must be professional colour prints (dye-sublimation, as photo kiosks and labs produce), not inkjet prints from home. The tool below makes a correctly sized 35 × 45 mm photo and a 4 × 6 inch sheet you can print at a photo kiosk, on your device, without uploading your face anywhere.
The Australian Passport Office warns that online passport photo services and apps can put you at risk of identity fraud, because they collect your photo. This tool never sends your photo anywhere: it is processed in your browser.
Drag and zoom until your face fits the oval: chin on the bottom of the oval, top of your head (hair included) on the top, eyes level.
Before you submit: quick checklist
- Taken in the last 6 months, in colour, sharp and evenly lit.
- Looking straight at the camera, neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open.
- No glasses for US photos (other countries allow them only without glare or tint).
- No hat or head covering, except for religious or medical reasons.
- Plain light background with no shadows, objects or other people.
- Not edited: no filters, beauty mode or retouching.
Your photo never leaves this device. No upload, no sign-up, no watermark.
Australian Passport Photo Requirements
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Size | 35–40 mm wide, 45–50 mm high (the tool uses 35 × 45 mm) |
| Face | 32–36 mm chin to crown |
| Background | Plain white or light, contrasting with your face |
| Age of photo | Less than 6 months old |
| Professional colour print (dye-sublimation), not inkjet; no creases or marks | |
| Pose | Facing the camera, neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open |
| Copies | 2 identical photos; a guarantor may need to sign the back of one |
Step by Step
- Take the photo against a plain light wall in daylight, from about 1.5 metres away, with someone else holding the phone.
- Add it to the tool with "Australia: passport" selected and fit your face to the oval.
- Download the 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) sheet and print it at a photo kiosk or lab at actual size. Kiosk and lab prints are dye-sublimation or silver-halide prints, not inkjet.
- Cut out two photos without damaging the edges. If your form needs a guarantor, they endorse the back of one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size is an Australian passport photo?
Between 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with a face of 32–36 mm from chin to crown. A standard 35 × 45 mm photo meets this.
Can I print an Australian passport photo at home?
Not on a home inkjet printer. Print the sheet at a photo kiosk or lab, which produces the professional print the Passport Office asks for.
Can I wear glasses?
The Passport Office recommends removing glasses. If you wear them, there must be no glare, tint or frames covering the eyes.
Why does the Passport Office warn against photo apps?
Because many apps and websites upload and store your photo. This tool processes it only on your own device.
