Quick answer: For an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) application you upload a square colour photo as a JPEG, at least 200 × 200 pixels, and most Indian missions say no larger than 900 × 900 pixels and 200 KB, with a plain light background and the full face visible from the front. Some missions allow up to 1,500 pixels and 500 KB, but a 600 × 600 pixel file under 200 KB meets every version of the rules. Make it free below; the signature is a separate upload you can size with our signature tool.
The OCI portal is known for rejecting photos without a clear reason, usually because of file size, a non-square image or a busy background. The rules also differ slightly between the Indian embassies and consulates that handle applications, so the safest choice is a file that fits the strictest version.
Drag and zoom until your face fits the oval: chin on the bottom of the oval, top of your head (hair included) on the top, eyes level.

How to Make the OCI Photo and Signature
- Take the photo in daylight against a plain light wall, looking straight at the camera.
- Add it to the tool with "India: OCI card" selected, choose "A digital photo to upload" and fit your face to the oval. The file is 600 × 600 px and under 200 KB.
- For the signature, sign in black ink on white paper, photograph it, and use the signature resizer with "Other form" to set the size your mission asks for.
- Upload both on the OCI services portal. If a mission also needs printed photos, choose "Printed photos" for a 4 × 6 inch sheet of 2 × 2 inch photos.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the OCI photo size?
A square JPEG of at least 200 × 200 pixels; most missions set a maximum of 900 × 900 pixels and 200 KB. A 600 × 600 pixel file under 200 KB is accepted everywhere.
Why is my OCI photo rejected?
The usual causes are a file over the size limit, an image that isn't square, a busy or dark background, or a face that is too small. The tool handles the first three and checks the background.
Can I use my passport photo for OCI?
Only if it's recent and square. Most passport photos are rectangular (35 × 45 mm), so they need re-cropping to a square, which the tool does.
What background should an OCI photo have?
Plain and light. Some missions say white, others ask for a light colour that isn't pure white, so a very light grey or off-white wall is the safest choice.
