Quick answer on resize image to 50kb: Choose the photo in the tool below and download it: the JPG will be under 50 KB, about 750–1,300 pixels wide at 60–75% quality. For SSC, IBPS, SBI and RRB photos the allowed range is 20–50 KB, and the tool is already set to that: a maximum of 50 KB and a minimum of 20 KB.
Fifty kilobytes is the standard upper limit for the photograph on Indian government exam and bank recruitment forms, and its minimum (usually 20 KB) catches people out just as often as the maximum. The tool below hits the range on your own device, without uploading your photo.
Your photos never leave this device. Close the page and they are gone.
How to Resize an Image to 50KB in 4 Steps
- Choose your photo in the tool above (or several at once). iPhone HEIC photos and PNG screenshots are fine; the result is always a real JPG.
- Check the limit: the tool is set to 50 KB, with a minimum of 20 KB. If the form also gives a minimum, such as “20 to 50 KB”, type it in the second box so the file is not too small either.
- Set the dimensions only if the form gives them. Leave “Keep shape” selected otherwise: the tool shrinks the photo just enough to stay sharp. For an SSC photo, choose cm and 3.5 × 4.5; for IBPS, choose pixels and 200 × 230.
- Download the JPG (or all of them as a .zip) and upload it. The result line shows the exact KB, the size in pixels and the JPEG quality it used.
Where You Need a Photo Under 50 KB
The most common forms with a 50 KB limit:
| Where | File | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| SSC (CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD, CPO) | Photograph, 3.5 × 4.5 cm | 20–50 KB |
| IBPS, SBI, RRB, LIC | Photograph, 200 × 230 px | 20–50 KB |
| IBPS, SBI, RRB | Left thumb impression, 240 × 240 px | 20–50 KB |
| Protean (NSDL) PAN | Photograph | Up to 20 KB, so use the 20 KB tool instead |
Limits change between years and forms, so check the instructions on the upload page itself and type its exact numbers into the tool.
What a 50 KB Photo Looks Like: Our Test
We ran the tool above on two files: a 6-megapixel camera photo full of fine detail (2,725 × 2,225 pixels, 810 KB), which is hard to compress, and a smoother 12-megapixel test image with sensor grain, like a typical phone shot of a person against a wall (4,032 × 3,024 pixels, 3.1 MB). With “Keep shape” selected, it shrank each one only as far as it had to, so the JPEG quality stayed at 60% or more:
| File | Result | Size in pixels | JPEG quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 MP detailed camera photo (810 KB) | 47.9 KB | 753 × 615 | 62% |
| 12 MP smoother image (3.1 MB) | 46.6 KB | 1285 × 964 | 76% |
So 50 KB allows about 753 × 615 pixels for a camera photo and 1285 × 964 for the smoother 12 MP image, far more than a form needs. With exact dimensions such as 200 × 230 pixels the photo usually fits at 90% quality or more.
Photo in the 20–50 KB Range at Exact Pixels
In our test with “Set width and height in cm” at 3.5 × 4.5 cm and 200 dpi (the SSC photo size), the tool produced a 276 × 354 pixel photo of 40.9 KB at 95% quality from the camera photo, and 20.5 KB from a simpler image. Both are inside 20–50 KB, so both upload first time. If a picture is so simple that it stays under 20 KB even at top quality, the tool adds an invisible blank block to reach the minimum, without changing the photo.
How the Tool Picks the Size
A JPEG's file size depends on two things: how many pixels it has and how strongly it is compressed (the “quality” setting). Most compressors only lower the quality, which is why their 20 KB results look blocky. This tool searches for the highest quality that fits and, if that would fall below about 60%, makes the photo slightly smaller in pixels instead, because a smaller sharp photo looks far better on a form than a large blurry one. It also writes the resolution (dpi) into the file, which some government portals check, and counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes so the file passes whichever way the portal measures.
Frequently Asked Questions: Resize Image to 50KB
How do I reduce a photo to 50 KB?
Choose it in the tool above and download; the limit is already 50 KB with a 20 KB minimum. Set the pixels or centimetres first if your form gives them.
How do I make a photo between 20 KB and 50 KB?
Keep the tool's settings (maximum 50, minimum 20). It aims close to 50 KB for sharpness and pads the file if it would come out under 20 KB.
What is a 50 KB photo size in pixels?
At good quality, about 750 × 615 pixels for a detailed camera photo and up to 1,300 pixels wide for a simpler one. Exam photos are much smaller (200 × 230 or 276 × 354 pixels), so they fit at high quality.
How do I compress an image to 50 KB on a phone?
Open this page on your phone, tap Choose photos, pick the photo from your gallery or take one, and download the result. It works on Android and iPhone, including HEIC photos.
Why does the SSC site reject my 50 KB photo?
Check the minimum (20 KB) and the dimensions, and make sure the file is a real JPG. Also note that many SSC forms now capture a live photo, so read the current notice.
