Quick answer: Paste your text into the free word counter below to see the number of words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences and paragraphs, plus reading and speaking time. It also shows how your text measures against common limits: 280 characters for an X post, 160 for a single text message, about 155 for a Google meta description, 3,000 for a LinkedIn post and 2,200 for an Instagram caption. One tap can fix capital letters, remove double spaces and stray line breaks, delete duplicate lines or sort a list. Your text never leaves your device.
Word counters are among the most-used tools online, and most are buried under ads, autoplay videos and pop-ups, or send what you paste to their servers. That matters when the text is an unpublished article, a cover letter or a work document. This one runs in your browser and saves your draft only on your device, so a refresh doesn't lose your work.

How Reading and Speaking Time Are Worked Out
Reading time uses 238 words a minute, the average silent reading speed for non-fiction found by a large 2019 review of 190 studies of adult readers in English. Speaking time uses 140 words a minute, a comfortable pace for a presentation or speech, so a 5-minute talk is about 700 words. Fast readers and fast talkers will finish sooner, and technical text takes longer.
The Clean-Up Tools
- Sentence case fixes text typed with Caps Lock on, or copied in capitals, and capitalises the first letter of each sentence.
- Title Case capitalises each main word for headlines, leaving short words like "of", "and" and "the" in lower case.
- Remove extra spaces deletes double spaces, tabs and spaces at the ends of lines, which is common in text copied from PDFs.
- Join lines into paragraphs repairs text from PDFs and emails where every line ends with a break, keeping real paragraph breaks.
- Remove duplicate lines and Sort lines A–Z tidy lists of names, emails or keywords.
- Straight quotes turns curly quotes, long dashes and "…" into plain characters, which some forms and code editors need.
- Find and replace changes every match at once; Undo reverses the last 30 changes.
"Most used words" lists your most repeated words, leaving out small common ones, with how often each appears. Use it to spot a word you lean on too much, or to check that the key term of an article appears naturally.
